Aguino, Martina – Pitcher with Lightning Designs (1940’s)

4.5"w x 3.5"h

$ 200.00

Martina Aguino began making pottery in the late 1930s period.  This pitcher is incised with a cloud and lightning design.  The handle and spout along with the base are fully polished a deep red.  The designs are incised into the clay and then highlighted with clay slips.  It is signed on the bottom, “Martina Aguino”.   The pitcher is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.

Martina continued the revival in the 1960s.  This new era in San Juan pottery, much as at the other Pueblos in this period, focused on a refinement of the earlier styles. Incised Potsuwi’i style along with the more graphic polychrome incised designs were the foundation of these new potters.
