Ami, Dorothy – Jar with Moth Design (2022)

6"w x 3.75"h

$ 300.00

Dorothy Ami is known for her traditional style of Hopi-Tewa pottery.  She is related to Mark Tahbo, and he taught her to make pottery.  This jar has a round shoulder and a short neck.  It is painted with bee-weed (black) and three different colors of clay.  The jar has the classic Chapella family moth design.  There is a male moth on one side and a female one on the other side. They are separated by a star pattern and a “three mesa” pattern.  Note the use of deep red, brown, and mauve clay slips for coloration.  The jar was traditionally fired to create various blushes on the surface.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, ‘Dorothy Ami” and a pipe for Tobacco Clan.
