Antonio, Frederica – Double Design Water Jar

6.5"w x 6"h

$ 1,450.00

Frederica Antonio is renown for her intricately painted pottery. Each piece is coil built and then finely painted. Her designs are a series of fine vertical and horizontal lines which are then filled in to create larger images in the squares.  This jar combines two different styles of painting.  First, it is designed with the small squares to create four different patterns (rain, stars, wind and mesas).  Over that is painted large wind patterns in three different colors of clay.  They have then painted over again so that the squares appear to be on top of the colored patterns. The result is a jar which has one appearance when it is up close (the squares) and another at a distance (the larger clay-colored designs).  It is an amazingly intricate yet flowing use of design and form.  The base of the jar is concave, reminiscent of historic Acoma jars which were carried on the head.  This combination of thin walls, classic shape, and tightly painted design create a piece which is visually stunning!  The jar is signed on the bottom.
