Antonio, Frederica – Double Overlay “Rain Cloud” Water Jar
This jar is a classic water jar Frederica Antonio. Each piece is coil built and then finely painted. Her designs are a series of fine vertical and horizontal lines that are then filled in to create larger images in the squares. This jar has a round body and an elongated neck. The neck of the jar is painted with rain and raincloud patterns in a swirl. The body of the jar has a “double overlay” design. The checkerboard pattern is one design, which has four different sections. They are cloud and rain design. They are painted over, or “overlay” with bold sections of red and orange clay slips. The result is a star and wind pattern which is apparent from a distance. It almost seems to disappear when viewing the piece up close as the checkerboard pattern is more obvious. The jar is painted with bee-weed and red clay slips. The base is indented, a reminder by the artist of historic Acoma pottery which had the indention so it could be worn on the head. The jar is signed on the bottom, “F. Antonio”.
