This is a complex painted jar by Frederica Antonio.  The shape is a large water jar with a high shoulder and short neck.  The jar is painted in four sections from top to bottom.  There are five different colors along with six different designs.  The bottom has a corn design, which symbolic of prosperity.  The sections are painted with red and tan clay slips.  Above the corn are cloud designs with lighting extending through the center.  The central colorful band is the autumn leaves.  This section has five colors, with the addition of the darker brown. The neck has two different spiraling winds design that swirls up to the rim.  It is unusual for her to use two different designs as it swirls up and they continue to alternate as the jar is turned!  There is an exceptional amount of variety in design and coloration in this jar. Each square on the jar is painted with bee-weed, then filled in with a clay slip and THEN it is painted over again so that the lines are differentiated between each color.  It is much more time consuming but it is also much more visually dynamic. The base of the jar is concave, reminiscent of historic Acoma jars that were carried on the head.  This combination of thin walls, creative shapes, and tightly painted design creates a piece that is unique and quite stunning!  The jar is signed on the bottom, “F. V.  Antonio”.
