Antonio, Frederica – Five Color Jar with Double Cloud Design

4.5"w x 5.5"h

$ 1,350.00

This is an intricately painted five-color jar by Frederica Antonio.  She is renowned for her intricately painted pottery. Each piece is coil built and then finely painted. Her designs are a series of fine vertical and horizontal lines that are then filled in to create larger images in the squares.  This is a water jar shape with a low shoulder and short neck.  The body of the jar is painted with two different variations of the same checkerboard pattern.  Frederica noted that it is the same design above and below the shoulder.  Above the shoulder, the clouds swirl while below they are vertical.  The neck of the jar is painted with different clay slips to create a checkerboard corn pattern.  It is a complex design that is visually striking in coloration.  The base of the jar is concave, reminiscent of historic Acoma jars that were carried on the head.  This combination of tightly painted designs on a water jar is visually striking!  It is signed on the bottom, “F. V. Antonio”.
