This jar has two of the most complex styles of painted designs created by Frederica Antonio. Each piece is coil built and then finely painted. Her designs are a series of fine vertical and horizontal lines which are then filled in to create larger images in the squares.  This jar has a classic shape with a high shoulder and short neck.  There are four panels of design.  Two of the sections have the Autumn Leaves as their design using diamond-shaped patterns.  The other two sections are the “sunset clouds”.  What makes both of these sections so complex and time-consuming is not just the variety of colors, but how they are painted.  Frederica has to make all the squares first, then go back and add the color and THEN paint over them again with the black bee-weed!  The clouds are contrasted with three different colors of clay along with white and black.  The result of this time-consuming process is a fully designed and visually striking jar. There is even a slight texture to the surface of the jar with all the layers of clay applied!  The base of the jar is concave, reminiscent of historic Acoma jars which were carried on the head.  This combination of thin walls, classic shape, and tightly painted design creates a piece that is visually stunning!  The jar is signed on the bottom, “F. V. Antonio”.
