8"w x 7.5"h

$ 4,200.00

This jar is an intricately painted water jar by Frederica Antonio. This jar is coil built and then finely painted. Her designs are a series of fine vertical and horizontal lines which are then filled in to create larger images in the squares.  This shape is a water jar shape with a high shoulder and a short neck.  This piece has three different colors of clay, along with the black (bee-weed), to create the “Spring Flowers” design.  On the colorful areas, she first paints the lines, then adds the color, and finally goes over the lines again so that the colors and squares are more delineated.  It takes more time but creates a more elegant appearance.  The jar has snow designs at the bottom (checkerboard), then a color band of the first growths of flowers after the winter.  Then a back of rain designs in black-and-white.  Finally, there is the colorful band around the top of the shoulder and the neck symbolizing the flowers beginning to bloom.  The squares on this piece are very tightly painted and the colorful sections create their option illusion of movement. The base of the jar is concave, reminiscent of historic Acoma jars that were carried on the head.  This combination of thin walls, classic shape, and tightly painted design creates a piece that is visually stunning!  The jar is signed on the bottom, “F. V.  Antonio”.
