Frederica Antonio is known for her intricately painted geometric designs.  This jar is a classic Acoma water jar shape and very thin walled. The jar is coil built, polished and then painted using a series of fine vertical and horizontal lines which are then filled in to create larger images in the squares. The design on this jar is complex in terms of the number of layers of clay slip painted onto the piece.  The piece is first fully painted with the checkerboard wind pattern.  She then paints all the color into the small squares to emphasize the various designs.  THEN she goes back with the black and has to repaint over all the designs final time so that the black lines delineate the patterns.  It is a very time-consuming and precision oriented process.   Note the designs created in black, white, red, and tan.  The base of the jar is concave, reminiscent of historic Acoma jars which were carried on the head.  This combination of thin walls, classic shape, and tightly painted design create a piece which is visually stunning!  The jar is signed on the bottom.
