Antonio, Frederica – Jar with Rainbow Rim and Lightning Designs
This is an intricately painted water jar by Frederica Antonio. Each piece is coil built and then finely painted. Her designs are a series of fine vertical and horizontal lines which are then filled in to create larger images in the squares. This jar has a rainbow pattern around the neck in red, brown, and taupe-colored clay. The jar has four larger sections of geometric designs with corn, rain, lightning, and bee-weed (the plant used for the black paint on the pottery). Separating each section of the jar are three lightning patterns that extend from the neck to near the base. They are highlighted with two different clay colors and black. The base of the jar is concave, reminiscent of historic Acoma jars which were carried on the head. This combination of thin walls, classic shape, and tightly painted design creates a piece that is visually stunning! The jar is signed on the bottom, “F. V. Antonio”.
