Antonio, Frederica – Jar with Spiraling Butterfly Wings

5.75"w x 4.75"h

$ 1,950.00

This is a strikign water jar by Frederica Antonio.  The shape is classic for Acoma with a high shoulder and short neck. The jar is coil built and painted with bee-weed (black) and two different red clay slips. Frederica paints the horizontal lines first, then the vertical ones, and finally fills in the squares with design.  This jar has a traditional style butterfly wing design painted with two different colors of clay slip. They spiral down from the rim.   Separating them are rain and lightning designs.  Note how the squares are smaller at the neck and then larger at the shoulder, matching the shape of the jar.  The inner rim of the jar is slipped with red clay.  The base of the jar is concave, reminiscent of historic Acoma jars that were carried on the head.  This combination of thin walls, creative shapes, and tightly painted design creates a piece that is unique and quite stunning!  The jar is signed on the bottom, “F. V. Antonio”.
