Antonio, Frederica – Large Four Seasons Lightning Design Water Jar
This is an exceptional large water jar by Frederica Antonio. The shape is classic for Acoma with a high shoulder and short neck. The jar has four large spiraling sections representing the four seasons. The designs are corn, rain, snow, and falling leaves. Each section is painted with bee-weed (black) and Frederica paints horizontal lines and then vertical lines and then fills them in with the design. Note how the squares are smaller at the neck and then larger at the shoulder, matching the shape of the jar. Separating each section is a lightning design. They are painted with three different colors of clay, along with the black bee-weed. The inner rim of the jar is slipped with red clay. The base of the jar is concave, reminiscent of historic Acoma jars that were carried on the head. This combination of thin walls, creative shapes, and tightly painted design creates a piece that is unique and quite stunning! The jar is signed on the bottom, “F. V. Antonio”.
