This is an exceptional miniature jar by Frederica Antonio.  The shape is a large water jar with a high shoulder and short neck.  The jar is painted in four sections.  Two of the sections are her classic “falling leaves” design.  There are squares that are painted with clay slips and then the black lines are painted again. It is much more time-consuming but it is also much more visually dynamic.  It is amazing how detailed the squares are for the size of the jar!  Separating the two colorful sections are a band of lightning and one with stars.  Note how in each section the design not only fits the form of the jar but gets larger and smaller.  The base of the jar is concave, reminiscent of historic Acoma jars that were carried on the head.  This combination of thin walls, creative shapes, and tightly painted design creates a piece that is unique and quite stunning!  The jar is signed on the bottom, “F. V.  Antonio”.
