This is the first time we have had this shape of jar by Frederica Antonio.  She is known for her intricately painted pottery. Each piece is coil built and then delicately painted. Her designs are a series of fine vertical and horizontal lines that are then filled in to create larger images in the squares.  This jar has tall sides and a slightly turned in “infinity rim”.  The shape creates a lot of design area!  This piece has a series of interlocking “cloud” patterns which are outlined in red and tan clay slips.  They extend from the rim to the base.  What is distinctive is that each of the sections has different black-and-white designs!  there are star, rain, corn, and lightning designs. The jar is stunning from every direction.  The small inturned “infinity rim” is the perfect touch to end the jar as it seems as if the designs flow into the piece. The base of the jar is concave, reminiscent of historic Acoma jars that were carried on the head.  This combination of thin walls, classic shape, and tightly painted design creates a piece that is visually stunning!  The jar is signed on the bottom, “F. Antonio”.
