Antonio, Frederica – “Teaching Jar” with Cloud Designs

6.75"w x 5.5"h

$ 1,200.00

Frederica Antonio is renown for her intricately painted pottery. Each piece is coil built and then finely painted. Her designs are a series of fine vertical and horizontal lines that are then filled in to create larger images in the squares.  This jar is a classic olla shape with a high shoulder and a short neck.  Frederica calls this her “teaching jar”, as she used it to teach her granddaughter Leah Pedro (11 years old), how to paint her pottery designs.  Check out the last photo, which shows the two pieces together!  Frederica’s is much more intricate in design, but there is definitely some talent in the work of her granddaughter.  It is interesting to see how the art of making and painting such intricate pottery is passed on through the generations!  The base of the jar is concave, reminiscent of historic Acoma jars that were carried on the head.  This combination of thin walls, classic shape, and tightly painted design creates a piece that is visually stunning!  The jar is signed on the bottom.
