Antonio, Frederica – Water Jar with Five-Color “Autumn Leaves”
This is an exceptional large water jar by Frederica Antonio. The shape is classic for Acoma with a high shoulder and short neck. The jar has four large panels with her famous “autumn leaves” design. Each section is painted with five different colors. Amazingly, each square on the jar is painted with bee-weed, then filled in with a clay slip and THEN it is painted over again so that the lines are differentiated between each color. It is much more time consuming but it is also much more visually dynamic. The remainder of the jar is painted with an interlocking cloud pattern that encircles the jar. Each of the tiny squares is part of a larger design. It’s almost like looking through a window a leaves blowing in the breeze! The base of the jar is concave, reminiscent of historic Acoma jars that were carried on the head. This combination of thin walls, creative shapes, and tightly painted design creates a piece that is unique and quite stunning! The jar is signed on the bottom, “Frederica Antonio”.
