Rachel Aragon is one of the remaining traditionalist potters working at Acoma.  Born in 1938, she is still making pottery at almost 80 years old!  Her classic olla (water jar) shapes have long been the standard for Acoma pottery, accompanied by her stunning painting. This jar is from 2004.  It is a classic Acoma water jar shape with a high shoulder and short neck. The jar has four sections with birds, probably parrots, encircling the piece.  Surrounding the birds are rainbow bands along with cloud and rain designs.  It is a very traditional design and also one that is very tightly painted on this jar!  If you look closely you can see the red clay areas are just slightly burnished (polished).  It has the traditional concave base which, historically, was made to make the jar wearable on the head.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Rachel Aragon”.  The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
