Atencio, Gregorita – Incised Polychrome Bird Effigy Bowl (1950’s)

6.75" long x 5"w x 2.5"h

$ 150.00

Gregorita Atencio began making pottery in the 1940s.  She was not part of the “original seven” but quickly followed in their style. This piece is from the 1950s and it is incised with design.  It is in the shape of a bird with a relief worm or snake in the center.  The shallow part of the bowl is matte and highlighted with red and white clay slips. The exterior is fully polished.  From the shape of the tail, this was probably made to be an ashtray.  Utilitarian pieces like this were common in the 1950s.  However, it appears to never have been used, as it is in very good condition.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Gregorita Atencio”. The bowl is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
