This is an exceptionally large jar by Daniel Begay.  The piece is coil-built, carved, stone-polished, and traditionally fired.  The jar has a low shoulder and a short neck. The bottom is fully polished and the rim has a micaceous slip. There are four turtles carved into the clay.  Each has a different shell design.  They are separated by feather and waterfall designs.  Areas are stone polished to a high shine and create a striking contrast of matte and polished surfaces on this jar.  The style of carving has a beveled appearance to the angle of the cuts into the clay.  The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Daniel Begay”.

Daniel Begay

Daniel T. Begay learned to make pottery from his father, Harrison Begay Jr., and his mother, Marie John. Daniel grew up in Santa Clara Pueblo and is Diné, which inspired him to combine the two cultures and traditions in his pottery. Each piece is coil-built, deeply carved, stone polished, and traditionally fired. Daniel has a Master’s in Business Administration. He is married to Melodie and has three daughters, Violet, Ayani, and Kwynn. He signs his work “Daniel B.” and adds the year the pot was made.
