This is a square jar by Daniel Begay. The piece is coil-built, carved, stone-polished, and traditionally fired. The jar is a complicated shape to make with a square shape, a sharp shoulder, and a flat top. How he is able to make such complicated forms and carve them is amazing! The top of the jar has a feather and lightning pattern. There are two heartline bears on opposite sides. The opposite sides plant, leaves, and geometric designs. Note the fluid nature of the jar with designs that extend downward and across the surfaces in complete imagery. While not a huge piece, it is one of his more technically challenging forms and designs. The designs are both matte and highly polished. which draws the eye across the surface of the piece. The style of carving has a beveled appearance to the angle of the cuts into the clay. The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Daniel Begay”. This jar has a second place ribbon from the 2023 Gallup Ceremonials.
