This is a creative large carved jar by Daniel Begay. The shape is square with four flat sides. Each side is a separate panel of design. One has a heartline bear above waves with a cloud design. The next has a waterfall with a prayer feather. The next is another heartline bear with a bird design above the bear. Finally, there is a panel with matte raindrops and water designs. Each section is deeply carved and has a combination of matter and polished designs. What makes this piece so difficult is that at the top edge, the clay extends inward in a straight manner and then there is a small neck. The top of the jar has a spiraling walking bear paw design. The top and neck are fully polished. The sides separating each panel are matte. The matte is smooth and perfectly sanded to create the best visual contrast. This certainly adds to the sophistication of his carving and designs. Note how Daniel’s designs also combine both thin and thicker lines to enhance the imagery. The style of carving has a beveled appearance to the angle of the cuts into the clay. The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Daniel Begay”.
