Begay, Jr., Harrison – Bowl with Yei Figures and Waterfall Designs
Harrison Begay, Jr. has won numerous awards over the years for his deep carved pottery. This bowl is round in shape with a slight rim and it is fully carved. There are two Yei figures, one on either side. Each figure is different with complex carving on the mask and body areas. Separating them are cloud, mesa, and waterfall designs. The rim of the bowl is fully polished and the jar is fired a deep black. The polished sections are selected by Harrison so that they stand out more in contrast to the black matte areas. Note as well the style of carving, which has a beveled appearance to the angle of the cuts into the clay. This is a very distinctive style of carving for his pottery. The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Harrison 2021”.
