Begay, Jr., Harrison – Brown Water Jar with Dragonfly, Butterfly and Spiral Sun

4.75"w x 5.25"h

This is a very complex water jar by Harrison Begay, Jr..  He has won numerous awards over the years for his deep carved pottery.  This jar has a very intricately carved dragonfly on one side.  Below the dragonfly there are two other old-style dragonflies, all are polished.  As the jar is turned there is a polished cross and wind design and then a matte and polished butterfly.  The wings are both matte and polished is a striking visual.  Then opposite the carved star is a spiral sun.  It fired just perfectly with a bit different coloration, which makes it stand out on the piece!  The rim of the jar is fully polished.  The jar is fired a brown coloration which is a signature style to Harrison’s pottery and always seems to remind me of the historic Navajo pottery colorations. The polished sections stand out more in contrast to the matte areas.  Note as well the style of carving, which has a beveled appearance to the angle of the cuts into the clay. This is a very distinctive style of carving for his pottery.  The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Harrison”.
