Begay, Jr., Harrison – Jar with Old Style Dragonflies and Stars
This is a very complex jar by Harrison Begay, Jr.. He has won numerous awards over the years for his deep carved pottery. This jar has old-style dragonflies carved into the clay. They are surrounded by stars, water, plant and cloud designs. The dragonflies are polished while the other designs are both matte and polished. The variation in surfaces creates a more striking appearance. The rim of the jar is also fully polished. Harrison has a distinctive style of carving, which has a beveled appearance to the angle of the cuts into the clay. The jar was fired a brownish red which creates striking variations of color from top to bottom. The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Harrison ’19”.
