Begay, Jr., Harrison – Jar with Yei and Dragonflies

4.5"w x 5.5"h

$ 1,000.00

Harrison Begay, Jr. has won numerous awards over the years for his deep carved pottery.  This jar is fully carved and has a high shoulder and a short neck. The jar has a Yei figure on one side and dragonflies on the other.  Note the complexity of the Yei figure with the feathers and then all the stars carved around the neck!  As the jar is turned there is a sun along with two dragonflies and cloud design.  Interestingly, both the Yei figures and the dragonfly are “prayer messengers”, so they work perfectly on this jar.  The piece is fired a striking brown coloration.  The designs are either polished or matte, which Harrison alternates to accentuate his imagery. Note as well the style of carving, which has a beveled appearance to the angle of the cuts into the clay. This is a very distinctive style of carving for his pottery.  The highly stone polished surface creates a strong visual distinction between the matte and polished surface.  The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Harrison ’20”.
