Begay, Jr., Harrison – Jar with Yei, Turtle, and Cloud Designs (2002)
Harrison Begay, Jr. has won numerous awards over the years for his deep carved pottery. This jar with a round body and a turned-out rim. The outside neck of the jar is fully polished. The entire piece s fully carved. There is are Yei figure on one side. The Yei figures are considered the “prayer messengers”. There is a carved turtle and there is a swirling cloud as the jar is turned. All the designs are both polished and matte. The highly stone polished surface creates a strong visual distinction between the matte and polished surface. Note as well the style of carving, which has a beveled appearance to the angle of the cuts into the clay. This is a very distinctive style of carving for his pottery. The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Harrison ’02”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
