Begay, Jr., Harrison – “Prayer Messenger” Jar with Yei and Dragonfly Designs (2022)
This is a creatively designed jar by Harrison Begay, Jr.. He has won numerous awards over the years for his deep-carved pottery. This jar with a round body and a sloping neck. The entire piece s fully carved. There is a Yei face on one side. Below the face are stars. The face has both polished and matte surfaces. The Yei figures are considered the “prayer messengers”. The opposite side has a dragonfly, which is also a prayer messenger. Separating the two designs are cloud, feather, sun, and wind patterns. It is a powerfully designed jar with strong, thoughtful imagery. All the designs are both polished and matte. The highly stone polished surface creates a strong visual distinction between the matte and polished surface. Note as well the style of carving, which has a beveled appearance to the angle of the cuts into the clay. This is a very distinctive style of carving for his pottery. The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Harrison ’22”.
