Begay, Jr., Harrison – Square Bowl with Yei Figure and Dragonfly

7"w x 5"h

$ 1,600.00

Harrison Begay, Jr. has won numerous awards over the years for his deep carved pottery.  This bowl is an unusual shape as it is square in form.  The sides are not flat, but rounding.  The rim is undulating and fully polished. The body of the bowl is deeply carved and highly polished in areas.  There is a Yei figure, along with a waterfall, dragonfly, and cloud designs.  The polished sections are selected by Harrison so that they stand out more in contrast to the black matte areas.  The placement of the designs on the rounded edges gives them prominence and adds to the visual flow of the bowl.  Note as well the style of carving, which has a beveled appearance to the angle of the cuts into the clay. This is a very distinctive style of carving for his pottery.  The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Harrison 21”.
