Blue Corn – Large Bowl with Feather and Lightning Designs (1972)

7.5"w x 4.5"h

Amazing!  This is a very intricately painted bowl by Blue Corn. It was made in 1972.  She was one of the great innovative San Ildefonso potters of the late 1900s.  She is often best known for her polychrome pottery but began her career making black pottery.  This bowl is fully polished on the outside.  Typical of her work, it has varied designs around the outside painted black-on-black.  There is a large section with feathers, then linear painted designs along with lightning and mountains.  There are additional clouds and more linear lightning.  The designs are perfectly painted and match the shape.  The firing is beautiful with the contrast of the matte on the polished surface.  It is signed in the clay, “Blue Corn”.  There is a date of 1972.  The bowl is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
