Blue Corn – Polychrome Jar with Feathers (1978)
8.5"w x 7.5"h
This is an iconic polychrome water jar by Blue Corn. Blue Corn began by making black-on-black pottery but it is her polychrome potter for which she is the most famous. This jar is polished with a white clay slip and then painted. The jar has a feather pattern painted around the shoulder. Around the neck is a rain design and below the shoulder are rain and lighting designs. The designs are painted with black mineral clay and then highlighted with a green clay slip. The polished cream-colored surface with contrasting black and green, combined with the feather pattern is certainly what makes this jar “iconic”. It is from 1978. The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Blue Corn”. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. There are some blushes from the outdoor firing on the surface near the base.
