Borts-Medlock, Autumn – Black Bowl with Carved Fish (1986)
3.5"w x 3.5"h
This an early carved bowl by Autumn Borts-Medlock. She is known for her often fancifully carved pottery. This jar is from 1986, made when she was only 19 years old! The bowl is deeply carved with three stylized fish. The fish encircle the bowl with asymmetric shapes. The rim and base add additional carving from the negative space. It’s interesting to see designs like this from the mid-1980s when typically the imagery is more traditional. The bowl is highly polished and fired a deep black. It’s always great to see early work from an artist such as Autumn and realize how much talent was there early on in her career! The jar is signed on the bottom, “Autumn Borts 1986”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
