Autumn Borts-Medlock is known for her often fancifully carved pottery. This jar is wonderfully complex in shape and design.  Autumn says she was inspired to make this piece when she was up in Ojo Caliente (hot springs near Santa Clara Pueblo).  She said being next to the cliffs and seeing all the birds flying around gave her inspiration. This jar is deeply carved with four birds.  It s a piece for which you have to look at the little details.  The birds are carved on various levels and behind them are the clouds.  The clouds are textured and note how there is a white clay slip on the edges and rim!  Near the base on one side are the “cliffs” which are carved in several layers and slipped with micaceous clay. The background where the clay has been carved away is slipped with a light gray clay with mica, which almost has a bluish appearance of the sky!  Amazingly complex and wonderful design on this piece!  The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Autumn Borts”.
