Autumn Borts-Medlock is known for her often fancifully carved pottery. This jar is an early piece of her pottery from 1992.  However, it is very interesting as it shows her early departure into “non-traditional” designs on her work.  This jar is deeply carved with a mountain scene.  In the sky, there is the sun on one side and stars and the moon on the other.  The sky is deeply carved into the clay with a series of horizontal bands.  The mountains are slipped with red and white clay.  It is only the neck that is stone polished with a cloud design extending down from the rim.  Near the base is a water or river design.  The use of various layers along and colors, along with such creative designs is distinctive for Autumn’s pottery.  As well, note the overall precision of the carved lines as everything on the jar is very precise. The piece is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Autumn Borts”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
