Borts-Medlock, Autumn – Jar with Tan Birds and Clouds
Autumn Borts-Medlock is known for her often fancifully carved pottery and the use of unique shapes. This jar is an exceptional piece of her pottery. It is fully carved with six birds. Each bird is flying in a different manner around the jar. Note the depth of the carving as well as the intricate edges to the wings! The birds are each polished tan (which is the natural color of the clay). The beak of each bird is a matte white clay. The area carved away surrounding the birds is a distinctive color of a bluish-gray clay that has just a trace of mica. The color creates the illusion of the birds flying in the sky! The neck of the jar is carved with cloud and lightning designs. The base is also fully carved with additional cloud motifs. The clouds are a white clay with just a bit of mica. It is a creative and complicated design combined with beautiful colorations of clay. The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Autumn Borts-Medlock 2020”.
