Cain, Billy – Asymmetric Bowl with Double Avanyu (1980s)

3.75"w x 3"?h

$ 300.00

Billy Cain was a son of noted potter Mary Cain.  He created traditional Santa Clara carved and polished pottery, but often with his own flare of shape or design.  This distinctive bowl has an asymmetric rim shape with a section that is indented. It would seem that he was trying to create the idea of water waves on the rim with the double avanyu below. There are two avanyu carved into the bowl.  One is polished and one is matte.  Note the complexity and precision of the carving.  As usual with his work, it is creative and distinctive.  The entire piece is polished, including the base.  The bowl is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Billy Cain”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
