Cain, Billy – Large Red and Tan Jar with Carved Avanyu (1986)
Billy Cain was a son of noted potter Mary Cain. He created traditional Santa Clara carved and polished pottery, but often with his own flare of shape or design. This tall jar is carved with an avanyu (water serpent) around the lower shoulder. Note the use of the negative space above and below the water serpent! The avanyu is polished red. The remainder of the jar is fully polished tan. It was traditionally fired. The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Billy Cain”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
