Cain, Mary – Large Jar with Carved Avanyu (1970’s)

8.25"w x 7.5"h

$ 975.00

Mary Cain was a daughter of Christina Naranjo and a granddaughter of Sarafina Tafoya.  She was known for her classic style carved and polished Santa Clara pottery.  This large jar is from the 1970’s.  It is fully carved with a water serpent encircling the piece.  Note the complexity of the design and the flowing imagery.  As well, there is use of the negative space from the neck.  The jar is highly polished and fired a dark black.  It is signed on the bottom, “Mary Cain”.    It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
