Calabaza, Jospeh “Tha-Mo-Thay” – Black-on-Red Bowl (1981)
Joseph “Tha-Mo-Thay” Calabaza (b. 1947) is a son of noted potter Blue Corn. This bowl is coil built, stone polished, and painted black. It is inspired by the earlier San Ildefonso black-on-red pottery from the late 1890s -1920s (see last photo). The bowl is highly polished and the designs are cloud, rain, and lightning designs. Note the precision of the designs. It is one of the few we have had by Jospeh. It is in excellent condition and no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Than-Mo-Thay”.
