Candelaria, Daryl – Wide Pottery “Shard” Bowl (1990s)

7"w x 8.25"h

$ 900.00

Daryl Candelaria is one of the few potters working at San Felipe Pueblo.  He studied both historic and contemporary pottery at the School of American Research in Santa Fe, NM.  This bowl has a round shape and it is fully designed with his classic “Shard” sections.  Each shard is either painted, polished, or carved in a representative manner by the various Pueblos.  Few potters have the technical ability to create so many diverse surfaces, let alone on one vessel!  There are sections with a carved and polished avanu and melon ribs.  There is a red-on-red polished and painted section. The painted areas are detailed with Acoma, Zia, San Felipe, and Jemez inspired areas.  There is exceptional detail and design variation on this bowl. His work is always just a bit amazing!  The rim and base are slipped with micaceous clay. It is signed, “Daryl Candelaria” and it is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  What a perfect way to portray the history and techniques of Pueblo pottery in one vessel!
