Lena Chio Charlie is one of the famous Hopi-Tewa potters from the 1940s-60s.  She was a sister of Irene Shupla and the grandmother of noted Hopi katsina carver and artist Neil David.  This canteen is made with the red Hopi clay and painted with a large bird at the design.  Interestingly, the angle of the spout of the canteen is very similar to the style of canteen made by Nampeyo of Hano.  The piece was traditionally fired. There is a corn cob stopper inside the spout of the canteen.  It is signed on the back with her corn hallmark.  The piece is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
