Charlie, Lena Chio – Canteen with Bird (1960s)

7.5"w x 7"h

$ 450.00

Lena Chio Charlie is one of the famous Hopi-Tewa potters from the 1940s-60s.  Not that much is known about her ancestry but that she could have been related to Namepyo of Hano but also that she might have been related to Irene Shupla.  This canteen is made with the red Hopi clay and painted with a large bird at the design.  Interestingly, the angle of the spout of the canteen is very similar to the style of canteen made by Nampeyo of Hano.  The piece was traditionally fired. There is a corn cob stopper inside the spout of the canteen.  It is signed on the back with her corn hallmark.  The piece is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
