This is a small but intricate seedpot by Debra Trujillo (Duwyenie) and Harvey Chavarria. The seedpot is fully polished and fired black. There is a single hummingbird with flowers and butterflies as the design. The edge of the medallion has mountain designs. The design is two-toned sienna in contrast with the black of the rest of the piece. The seedpot is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. It is signed, “Debra + Harvey”.

Debra Duwyenie is renowned for her highly polished incised pottery. At times she also works on pieces with her husband, noted potter Preston Duwyenie. He makes the piece of pottery on these pieces, and she does the polishing and incised designs. Debra is a granddaughter of Petra Gutierrez and the niece of noted potters Gloria Garcia (Goldenrod) & Lois Gutierrez. Debra also made pieces with Harvey Chavarria (1943-1991), and they were signed “Debra + Harvey.” Significantly, Debra does all of her sgraffito work into the clay before they are fired, which adds to the difficulty of her work. Debra has won numerous awards for her pottery at events such as Santa Fe Indian Market. Debra uses hand-coil, stone polish, paint, open fire, and hand sgraffito designs. We are pleased to carry a selection of her work at both our Scottsdale and Santa Fe locations.

In the 1980’s Debra Trujillo (now Duwyenie) worked with Harvey Chavarria to make pottery. Their collaborative work earned them awards at Santa Fe Indian Market and Harvey also did silver work and even inset the clay pieces in this shape into necklaces!
