Chino, Grace – Large Seedpot with Rain and Butterfly Wings (1970’s)
Simply Iconic! This is an exceptional large seedpot by Grace Chino with one of her most famous designs. The piece is coil built and painted with bee-weed (black) and a red clay slip. The design is a rain and butterfly pattern. It starts small at the top and gets larger as it extends downward. It is an early “op-art” style with the pattern going from small to large and a style used by later potters such as Dorothy Torivio. Grace was a daughter of noted potter Marie Z. Chino and a sister of noted potters Carrie Chino Charlie and Rose Chino. Over the years she won numerous awards for her pottery at Santa Fe Indian Market and her work was featured in the “7 Families in Pueblo Pottery” and in museums around the country. This piece is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Grace Chino”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
