Chino, Marie Z. – Bowl with Terraced Cloud Designs (1960s)

5.5"w x 4"h

$ 775.00

This is an unusual bowl by Marie Z. Chino.  Marie is famous as one of the revivalists at Acoma Pueblo, along with Lucy M. Lewis, Jessie Garcia, and a few others.  This bowl is thin-walled and tightly painted.  What is unusual is the design. The cloud patterns rise up from near the base and then back down from the rim.  The use of the white space adds to the flow of the design across the surface.  The way she put this design together is something I have rarely seen in Acoma pottery.  The black-and-white designs give the jar a very graphic and modernist appearance.  The bowl was traditionally fired so there are some very slight color variations to the white.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  It is signed on the bottom, “M. Z. Chino”.  It is always interesting to come across an unusual design that adds to our understanding of the creativity of this important Acoma potter!
