WOW!  This is an exceptional jar by Marie Z. Chino.  Marie is famous as one of the revivalists at Acoma Pueblo, along with Lucy M. Lewis, Jessie Garcia, and a few others.  This jar is coil-built and has a high shoulder and a corrugated rim.  The shape creates space for design. The jar has three large old-style birds as the designs. The heads are to the right with the wings in the center and the tail to the left.  It is typical of Marie’s work that she would paint three birds not four.  She was a masterful painter and it is more difficult to divide the jar into thirds and she rarely took the easy route the more visually dynamic one. The birds are painted with bee-weed and are wonderfully complex in design. The rim of the jar has small plant designs extending downward.  The rim is corrugated and she used a unique triangle form to create the corrugation.  The jar was traditionally fired with just a slight variation in color on the rim.  Just perfect!    The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Made by Marie Z. Chino”.   It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. There is one small spot of spalling, which is not unexpected, but minimal.  It is a classic jar where shape, history, and design are in perfect balance!
