Clashin, Debbie – 17″ Plate with Day and Night Scenes

10.5" diameter

$ 2,000.00

This is huge plate by Debbie Clashin.  She is a cousin of noted potter Mark Tahbo and a descendant of Grace Chapella.  Debbie has quickly become well known for her large-sized traditional Hopi-Tewa pottery. This large plate is 17″ diameter! Yes, that’s huge!  Most potters worry about making a 10″ or 12″ plate, let alone one that is 17″ across and having is survive drying, polishing, and firing! Debbie is daring to make such large pieces and it is exciting to see that they turn out!  The designs on this plate are divided into two sections.  One is the day and the other the night (with the stars).  The two sections have different designs and imagery inspired by the historic Sikyatki pottery.  The black is bee-weed (a plant) and the red is a natural clay slip.   The plate has been traditionally fired which creates the blushes across the surface.   Check out the rich coloration around the rim and on the back! Beautiful!  It is signed on the bottom with her name and a pipe for his “Tobacco Clan”.
