Clashin, Debbie – 18″ Wide Jar With Birds and Red Neck

18"w x 10"h

$ 6,000.00

This is an exceptional large jar by Debbie Clashin.  The jar is 18″ diameter, coil built and traditionally fired.  It is amazing to see pieces at this size by any Hopi-Tewa potter and especially surviving a traditional firing!   The jar has a very wide, round shoulder and a short neck.  The neck is slipped with a red clay.  The body of the jar is painted with four tumbling birds.  Each bird is painted with bee-weed (black) and highlighted with a red-orange clay slip.  The birds circle up to the neck and have feathers which extend down over the shoulder.  There is an exceptional precision in her painting on this jar!  The deep red of the clay on the neck is a perfect balance to the blushes on the surface of the jar.   It is signed on the bottom with her name and a pipe for his “Tobacco Clan”. The last two photos are from the jar in the traditinal firing.
