Clashin, Debbie – 19″ Wide Jar with Eagle and Hawk Tails

19"w x 11"h

$ 7,000.00

This is a spectacular large shoulder jar by Debbie Clashin.  She is a cousin of noted potter Mark Tahbo and a descendant of Grace Chapella.  Debbie has quickly become well known for her large-sized traditional Hopi-Tewa pottery.  This jar is SO large, it was actually difficult to photograph and capture the impact of the size.  It is not often we see a potter create a piece with a 19″ diameter!  The jar is painted with bee-weed (black) and two different colors of clay slip. Around the side of the jar are mountain designs.  Above the shoulder are large sections with Red-tail Hawk designs and dragonflies. Above the hawk tails are terraced clouds.  Separating them are sections with two eagle tail designs.  The red wings extend downward and above them are cloud and rain designs.  The jar is tightly painted and the colorations of the clay are dynamic.  The jar was traditionally fired and the blushes are stunning!  There is a depth to the coloration that adds to the visual impact of the jar.  It is signed on the bottom “Debbie Clashin” and a pipe for his “Tobacco Clan”.
