Clashin, Debbie – “Dragonfly Dreams” Large Jar with Dragonflies, Mountains, and Mesas

$ 2,800.00

This is an impressive large jar by Debbie Clashin.  She is a cousin of noted potter Mark Tahbo and a descendant of Grace Chapella.  Debbie has quickly become well known for her large-sized traditional Hopi-Tewa pottery. The jar has a classic Hopi storage jar shape with a high shoulder, sloping sides, and a short neck.  The jar has a graceful form that perfectly matches the complex painted designs.  The piece is painted with bee-weed (black) and clay slips.  The jar has two large dragonflies painted on the top.  They are intricately painted and are surrounded by smaller dragonflies and stars.  Separating them are sections with clouds, water, and mountains.  It is the dragonflies traveling from the mountains, to the water and the clouds, carrying one’s prayers. Below the shoulder are “sunset mountains” with various colorations from the setting sun in two different colors of clay.  The jar was traditionally fired with exceptional fire clouds across the surface.   It is signed on the bottom “Debbie Clashin” and a pipe for her “Tobacco Clan”.  There is certainly a wonderful depth of coloration on this jar, matched by its complex painted designs.
