Clashin, Debbie – Jar with Mesa and Bird Tail Designs

This is a classic jar by Debbie Clashin.  The jar has a round shoulder and a slight neck.  The design combines two classic images. There large eagle tail designs on two sides.  They are slipped with both deep red and orange clays.  Separating them is a classic design made famous by Grace Chapella.  There are three triangular patterns, representing the three Hopi mesas.  They are represented at night with a dragonfly and stars.  Above them are clouds and a Hopi-style bird painted in deep red.  It’s exciting to see Debbie not just revived these historic designs but to also give them her own story and keep them relevant and creative. The jar was traditionally fired with light blushes to the surface.  The shape and firing allow the clay to speak through the piece.   It is signed on the bottom with her name and a pipe for his “Tobacco Clan”.
