Clashin, Debbie – 11″ Wide Open Bowl with Bird and Eagle Tail Designs

11.5"diameter x 4"h

$ 1,550.00

This is a tightly painted large open bowl by Debbie Clashin.  She is a cousin of noted potter Mark Tahbo and a descendant of Grace Chapella.  Debbie has quickly become well known for her large-sized traditional Hopi-Tewa pottery. The piece is painted with bee-weed (black) and clay slips.  The entire surface is fully polished.  The large open bowl like this is often referred to as a “piki bowl” as it is used to mix the blue-corn flower for piki bread.  The inside of the bowl is tightly painted.   In the center, one half has a large bird and bird tail design. Much like Nampeyo of Hano, Debbie has deconstructed the imagery so that it flows around the half-circle.  Below are two large eagle tail patterns, surrounded by dragonflies and stars  Around the rim of the open bowl are mountain patterns.  The piece is very intricately painted with lots of thin lines.  There is a lot of color from the use of the two different clay slips.  The open bowl was traditionally fired with exceptional fire clouds across the surface.   It is signed on the bottom “Debbie Clashin” and a pipe for his “Tobacco Clan”.
